VANCIL AND ROMINE SET UP CHAMPIONSHIP SHOWDOWN FOR NITRO TOP FUEL AT SEASON FINALE

POMONA, Calif. (November 13, 2007) – The race for the 2007 AHDRA Screamin’ Eagle Championship series crown in Nitro Top Fuel just got tighter in Southern California over the weekend.
Doug Vancil beat Mike Romine in the final of the California Bike Week Nationals presented by Laidlaw’s Harley-Davidson at Auto Club Raceway on Saturday. The win – at the 11th of 12 2007 national events – was especially important for Vancil.

Not only did it give Vancil his second win in four final rounds this season, but it also revenged a runner-up to Romine in Rockingham, N.C. in October. Even more importantly, it set up a season finale showdown for the Nitro crown at this weekend’s season finale Rush Las Vegas Nationals, Nov. 15-18.

Takeshi Shigematsu held a 23-point lead over Vancil going into the Pomona event. Shigematsu was the No. 1 qualifier of the event with a category-best 6.37-second run, but he lost in the second round, allowing Vancil to take over the points lead. Vancil now has a 33-point cushion going into the final race. The season finale will also play host to the annual Screamin’ Eagle Las Vegas High Stakes Shootout – worth $12,000 to the winner.

Vancil beat Romine with a 6.340 run at 218.48 to cover Romine’s 6.429 at 212.23. It was Romine’s second trip to the finals and first runner-up of the season.

L.E. Tonglet remained perfect in Destroyer category final rounds. The New Orleans native has earned eight Destroyer wins this season en route to his first career Destroyer championship. Tonglet recorded a 9.256 at 141.56 to beat Ronnie Fensick’s 9.368 at 141.43. It was Fensick’s second runner-up of the season.

Gene Thomason earned the No. 1 qualifying position in Destroyer with a 9.268 run while Tonglet was second (9.268, Thomason had a higher mph). Douglas Horne was third with a 9.291 while Fensick was fifth in qualifying with a 9.325.

Dean Druschel earned his first Screamin’ Eagle Performance (SEP) victory of the season. Druschel beat Dan Norlin – a four-time finalist this season – with an 11.641. Norlin recorded an 11.642 for his second runner-up finish of the season.

Kevin Winters was the No. 1 qualifier in SEP action with an 11.507, followed by Stan Sheppard’s 11.515 and Joey Talbott’s 11.526. Norlin was ninth in qualifying while Druschel qualified 11th.

Wayne Pugh earned his first win of the season in ET racing by beating Chip Sutinen in the final round. Pugh used a 9.717 run to beat Sutinen’s 11.717.

The next and final AHDRA event of the season is the Las Vegas Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Nov. 15-18. The seventh annual Screamin’ Eagle Las Vegas High Stakes Shootout – worth $12,000 to the winner along with numerous other prizes – will be held on Nov. 16.

VANCIL WINS CHAMPIONSHIP; TONGLET, NORLIN AND DRAPP TAKE HOME 2007 AHDRA SCREAMIN’ EAGLE CHAMPIONSHIPS

LAS VEGAS (November 29, 2007) – The 2007 AHDRA Screamin’ Eagle Championship titles were given out Sunday at the season finale event at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Doug Vancil won two events in four final round appearances to earn the Nitro Top Fuel championship. Vancil had a 33-point lead over Takeshi Shigematsu going into the season finale. Vancil beat Shigematsu in the second round, wrapping up the championship.

Vancil lost to Jay Turner in the semifinals, however, and Turner went on to win the race. Turner recorded a 6.485-second pass at 214.69 mph to beat Joey Sternotti’s 6.379 at 211.23. It was Sternotti’s third runner-up performance of the season.

L.E. Tonglet not only won the race – his ninth of the season – but the championship as well. The New Orleans native was a perfect 9-0 in Destroyer final rounds this season, including Sunday’s win. Because of a double foul from his potential final round opponents in the semifinal round, Tonglet had a single run for the event victory.

Greg Best beat Stan Sheppard in the Screamin’ Eagle Performance (SEP) category final round. Best earned his fourth victory with am 11.614 run at 109.64 to cover Sheppard’s 11.725 at 109.39.

Dan Norlin, however, won the SEP championship. It was a double-victory weekend for Norlin. He claimed the Screamin’ Eagle High Stakes Shootout victory as well as the championship. Norlin pocketed $12,000 for the Screamin’ Eagle High Stakes Shootout victory, beating Matt Bluett in the final.

Edward Golson earned his first win of the season in ET action, beating Wayne Pugh. Golson’s 11.794 at 110.93 netted him the victory over Pugh’s red light foul at the starting line.

COOLBETH WINS SECOND CONSECUTIVE AMA TWINS FLAT TRACK CHAMPIONSHIP

February 9, 2008

COOLBETH WINS SECOND CONSECUTIVE AMA TWINS FLAT TRACK CHAMPIONSHIP

TUCSON (October 1, 2007) – To put it mildly, Saturday was a great night for Harley-Davidson racing at the AMA Flat Track Twins Ford Quality Checked Championship event at USA Race Park.
On any other night throughout the season, Joe Kopp’s win would be reason enough to celebrate. The 2000 AMA Grand National champion finally put his Team Latus/Screamin’ Eagle Harley-Davidson into the win column. It was the veteran’s first win this season and 12th of his career. And he battled the defending series champion, Kenny Coolbeth, the entire race.

On any other night, that would have been the talk of the town. But while Coolbeth couldn’t steal the win, he did steal the spotlight.

Coolbeth claimed his second consecutive AMA Twins Flat Track championship Saturday. Coolbeth went into the race with a 19-point lead over second place rider Jared Mees and the Blue Springs/Screamin’ Eagle team. Coolbeth’s second place finish combined with Mees’ fourth place finish gave him the championship with one race remaining this season.

“I never thought it would have been possible to win the championship before the final race of the season,” Coolbeth said. “The competition out here is so tough and Jared really made me earn it this season. He forced me to step up my riding and that made for an even better championship battle.

“Winning the championship with a new team last year was amazing but this year’s championship means more. My team worked so hard and we worked so much better together having one year of experience behind us. My crew members Craig Lager, Ryan Cross, Brad Bishop and Matt Hernigle gave me the best equipment on the track and that took a lot of the pressure off me all season.”

Coolbeth has claimed six race victories this season. He also has three second place finishes. He’s been off the podium just twice. Coolbeth has 15 career wins to go with his two series championships.

“It’s an understatement to say how proud we are of Kenny and the entire factory crew,” Harley-Davidson Racing Manager Anne Paluso said. “He’s had a great season and he earned that championship with consistently great races.

“Last year was the first season we brought back the Wrecking Crew and our team won five races and Kenny won his first AMA Twins championship. This year the teams have done even better. They worked really hard during the offseason to be able to come out and compete and their efforts have paid off in the form of 10 Wrecking Crew victories this season and another championship. We’re very proud of all four teams.”

They may have finished in the top two, but neither Kopp nor Coolbeth was first off the line on Saturday. Rich King took the lead early. After a red flag restart, King was again in the lead on his Corbin Seats Harley-Davidson. But Coolbeth and Kopp were able to get by on the first lap. Shortly after that, Coolbeth slipped slightly in turn four and Kopp took advantage and got by Coolbeth for the lead.

Kopp never relinquished the top spot after that.

“I had raced my way up from sixth to second place in one of my heat races and I knew then that I could pass if I had to,” Kopp said. “Kenny bobbled once and I took the lead. He pushed me and pushed me, and I had to make sure I didn’t make any mistakes because he would get by. He was right on me the entire race.

“This win wasn’t a gimme. Kenny made me earn it and I wouldn’t have it any other way. It was a great race and it restored some of the confidence I had lost throughout the season.”

While Kopp finished first and Coolbeth second, Wrecking Crew riders Mees and Bryan Smith (Pat Moroney’s Harley-Davidson) finished in fourth and 13th place, respectively. Mees maintains his second place in the standings. Smith is in third place and Kopp moved up into the No. 6 spot, just 14 points out of fourth place.

Coolbeth may have wrapped up the title but there is still one more trophy up for grabs this weekend when the Harley-Davidson Wrecking Crew joins the rest of the AMA Flat Track Twins racers in Las Vegas. Kopp still has a few things he would like to accomplish before the season is over.

“A few things need to happen, but I would like to see if I can’t climb my way up into fourth place,” Kopp said. “It would be great to see the Wrecking Crew riders in first through fourth place in the final standings. It’s the last race of the season and everyone is going to be gunning for the final trophy. The win in Tucson has given me more confidence so I’m hoping to turn that into to one more race victory.”

Coolbeth might be the biggest threat to Kopp once again as the champion suddenly is riding without the pressure of the point standings.

“The pressure to win a championship is over, but the desire to win another race is huge,” Coolbeth said. “This might be the most fun at the race track I can have in a long time. I can’t remember the last time I was racing just to win a trophy and not worrying about anything else. The season finale is in Las Vegas and I can’t think of a better way to finish the season.”

The AMA Twins finale at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in Las Vegas takes place Saturday.

TURNER TAKES NHRA EXHIBITION WIN AND LOOKS FORWARD TO BEING AT HOME TRACK IN ROCKINGHAM

TURNER TAKES NHRA EXHIBITION WIN AND LOOKS FORWARD TO BEING AT HOME TRACK IN ROCKINGHAM

RICHMOND, Va. (October 10, 2007) – NHRA officials running the Winner’s Circle at last weekend’s Torco Racing Fuels NHRA Nationals might have been confused when it came time to crown the winner of the Nitro Top Fuel category.
After all, Tommy Grimes had won each of the last four AHDRA exhibition events at NHRA races dating back to fall 2005. But this time was different.

Not only did Jay Turner beat Grimes in the second round, but he went on to win the race too.

Turner beat Phil Schmidt (6.628 seconds to 6.782) in the first round before topping Grimes (6.740 to 6.811) in the second round. He rode his Harley-Davidson to the win over Bill Furr in the final after Furr fouled at the starting line.

“We had a lot of racing fortune come our way over the weekend, but the team did a great job of putting us in the position to take advantage of the good luck,” Turner said. “We smoked the tires right away in the second round matchup and if Tommy had made a clean run, I would have lost. But they had a problem too and I was able to get back in it and win the round. Then Bill ran quicker than us, but left early. We got lucky this weekend but we were in the position to be lucky.”

Turner said he is a big supporter of AHDRA racers participating in exhibition events at NHRA national sites.

“It’s always great to run in front of big crowds on a great race track,” Turner said. “Over the years we’ve made some great friends who race in the Pro Mod, Pro Stock and other car categories so it was great to see everyone.

“It also helps us gather information. We’ve made a lot of runs this season and we’ve taken the information and we’ve been able to apply it to wherever we are. It’s been a good season and winning the NHRA event was a lot of fun.”

Now Turner and the rest of the AHDRA must change their focus to the final three events of the AHDRA Screamin’ Eagle championship season. Turner is currently third in the national Top Fuel point standings. Tak Shigematsu is the points leader with 706, while Doug Vancil is second with 642 and Turner is third with 554.

The series will continue the regular season this weekend with the Screamin’ Eagle Performance Parts Nationals in Rockingham, N.C. Qualifying begins Saturday.

“Rockingham is a great race,” Turner said. “We always have a big crowd and the racing is tough. You have to qualify well and make a great pass down the track every time if you want to win. Last season both ends of the national record fell at Rockingham and they haven’t been touched since. I think with the weather looking the way it is, that could change this weekend.

“We’ve been racing at Rockingham for a long time and we have a lot of great history there. We have strong momentum that we can carry over from Richmond and I think we’re in for another successful showing at Rockingham.”

HARLEY-DAVIDSON SPONSORS INAUGURAL FRESH COAST BASKETBALL CLASSIC

MILWAUKEE (October 18, 2007) – Harley-Davidson Motor Company will serve as the Premiere Sponsor of the Inaugural Fresh Coast Basketball Classic. The Classic will bring four Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU’s) to Milwaukee Nov. 23 and 24 for a basketball tournament held at the Midwest Airlines Center.
Participating schools in the Classic include Dillard University from New Orleans, LA, Langston University from Langston, OK, Lane College from Jackson, TN and Central State University from Wilberforce, OH.

The event will feature a college and career fair where students can visit with representatives from the participating schools as well as local colleges and universities at no charge. Representatives from Harley-Davidson will be on-hand to discuss the Harley-Davidson Foundation Minority Scholarship program and career opportunities with students. The fair is open to the public each day from 8:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.

“As a company, we’ve long supported programs that inspire young people to pursue their education options,” said Harold Scott, Harley-Davidson, Vice President Human Resources. “The Classic will do that in a fun way, as area young people and their families will have an opportunity to receive college information and exposure to the students, athletes and alumni of four great institutions.”

In addition to sponsorship and educational support, Harley-Davidson will extend an invitation for attendees to experience the Harley-Davidson brand by providing product information and displays.

The weekend will also feature a comedy show, gospel event, coach’s clinics and performances by the Central State University Band.

Organizers believe the Classic will present the city of Milwaukee to new and diverse visitors and will duplicate the success of HBCU sporting events taking place in Indiana, Kentucky and other southern states. The Classic has gotten great support from the Milwaukee business community.

“Harley-Davidson’s leadership has been key to making the Fresh Coast Classic a success,” said Synovia Youngblood, Chief Executive Officer of the Classic. “Milwaukee is incredibly fortunate to have a company like Harley-Davidson championing this effort.”

HARLEY-DAVIDSON AND BUELL PARTICIPATE IN FEMMOTO 2007

HARLEY-DAVIDSON AND BUELL PARTICIPATE IN FEMMOTO 2007

MILWAUKEE (October 18, 2007) – For the first time, Harley-Davidson joined Buell Motorcycle Company as a sponsor of Femmoto 2007, held at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway October 5-7, 2007. The event featured record attendance of 563 participants and provided women the chance to experience the corners on the track aboard a Buell motorcycle as well as enjoy the open road on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle.
“It was exciting for the Company to be part of Femmoto again this year and watch women really enjoy the track experience with the Buell demos and the street experience with the Harley demos,” said Karen Davidson. “There was a great deal of enthusiasm for the Harley demos from the women who were devoted sport bike riders, many of whom had never ridden cruisers let alone a Harley. Their smiles said it all.”

Harley-Davidson and Buell’s hospitality tent provided women the chance to view the new 2008 Harley-Davidson Softail Rocker C as well as the new Buell 1125R, learn about Harley-Davidson’s Rider’s Edge and Rentals programs, try on MotorClothes and sit back and relax with motorcycling videos, magazines and free ice cream. Both Harley-Davidson and Buell demo riders received a free t-shirt and the chance to sign up to win raffle prizes given away each day.

“My husband and I attended Femmoto 2007 and we both had a wonderful time,” said Teri Cardell, new Buell owner and Colorado resident. “We rode our bikes on Friday and I took a demo ride of the Buell Lightening XB12scg. I loved it so much, I purchased one within a week after we got home.”

On Saturday and Sunday in the hospitality tent, interactive seminars included a helmet seminar and a bike lift seminar. Karen Davidson, Creative Director, General Merchandise and great-granddaughter of one of the Company’s founders, William A. Davidson, was on-site Saturday to talk to women about MotorClothes apparel designed specifically for women. She also shared her unique insight on how the environment has changed for women riders through the years.

The Femmoto banquet held Saturday included a Fashion Show and unique Moto-Mate contest, similar in format to the Newlywed Game, but featuring motorcycle-related questions. Four couples competed and had the crowd laughing at some of the answers. The winning couple received a gift certificate for Harley-Davidson MotorClothes.

Femmoto, which began in 2001 as a women-only track day event, has evolved into a track and street demo event focused on women, while allowing men the chance to take street demos along side their women. In 2006, 330 women participated in Femmoto. This year, with the inclusion of men taking street demos as well as Friday’s track day where men and women could ride their personal motorcycles on the track, total attendance increased to 563 participants. Femmoto raises money for The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation “Race For The Cure”. This year, $13,188 was raised through Femmoto memberships, donations and auction events held over the weekend.

COOLBETH ALREADY LOOKING FORWARD TO DEFENDING AMA FLAT TRACK TWINS CHAMPIONSHIP IN 2008

February 9, 2008

COOLBETH ALREADY LOOKING FORWARD TO DEFENDING AMA FLAT TRACK TWINS CHAMPIONSHIP IN 2008

MILWAUKEE (October 26, 2007) – For the second consecutive season Kenny Coolbeth is spending his AMA Flat Track Twins offseason with the No. 1 plate. The Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle factory rider won the Twins championship again this season and he once more has earned the honor of having the No. 1 plate attached to his Harley-Davidson.
Coolbeth may have done all the riding on the track, but he’s quick to hand out the credit to his team.

“We communicated so much better this season and I think our team wanted it more than any other team out there,” said Coolbeth, a Warren, Conn., native. “It takes an amazing group of people to do what we did this season. Winning the second championship feels just as good as the first one. Our team wants to keep doing this and we’ve already put our focus on next season.”

What Coolbeth did this season, however, deserves mention. Not only did Coolbeth win six times, but also he finished in second place three times. He did not earn a podium finish at just two races out of 11 national events this season.

“We had big goals to accomplish this season and I think we did that,” Coolbeth said. “But I was lucky to have the best mechanics and the best motorcycles out on the track. Looking back, it seems crazy that we were able to win six races this season. The entire year was great. From winning the first race at Springfield to the last win (Monticello, N.Y.) it was just a wonderful season. There were a lot of highlights this year.”

With two championships and 15 national Twins events to his name, Coolbeth can only look forward to the next race.

“We won three races in 2006 and we improved on that this season,” Coolbeth said. “I think it would be very difficult to improve on six wins, but we’re going to approach 2008 the same way we did in 2007. We want to win every race we go to. That’s always been our goal and that won’t change. It took an entire team of people to win this championship and I’m just happy to be surrounded by such a talented crew.”

Some of Coolbeth’s strongest competition came from his Wrecking Crew team. Wrecking Crew riders Jared Mees, Bryan Smith and Joe Kopp finished in second, third and sixth place this season, respectively.

“Kenny is just the 10th person in AMA history to win back-to-back championships and not only that, but he had an amazing season,” Harley-Davidson Racing Manager Anne Paluso said. “He won an incredible amount of races and his Wrecking Crew teammates had a great season as well. The Wrecking Crew won every race except one and finished on the podium 19 times, which speaks to how good the teams are and how prepared they were for the season.

“Kenny and Jared had a hard-fought battle and it made for a very exciting part of the season for all of the fans. We’re excited that Kenny is going to lead the way in defending this championship next season.”

Mees and the Blue Springs Harley-Davidson team made it especially difficult for Coolbeth at times. Mess earned three victories this season, giving him six career national event wins.

Mees may have finished in second place for the second consecutive season, but he made some big improvements over the 2006 season. Along with his three wins and four second place finishes, Mees also was the points leader following five events this year.

“We had a great beginning to the season, winning three in a row starting with Bulls Gap (Ten.),” Mees said. “The biggest goal of each season for me is to do better than the previous season and we did that. Kenny just doubled my win total and that was the difference. He raced an incredible season but I’m still very happy with what we were able to accomplish.

“Blue Springs was a new sponsor this season and now they are pumped and ready for another season. It was a great season for us and the entire Harley-Davidson Wrecking Crew and it just makes us anxious to get back to racing.”

Now that Mees has been in the championship hunt, he is addicted to the thought of winning a championship some day. This season, he said, can help him accomplish that goal.

“Last year we kind of fell into second place at the last race,” Mees said. “I had never been in a run-and-gun race for the championship before this season and I had a lot of fun. I learned a lot this season and what it feels like to be racing for the title. I know our team can do a few things differently and hopefully that will affect the outcome next season.”

Mees said Coolbeth was one of the main reasons he was so competitive in 2007.

“Kenny really stepped up this season,” Mees said. “Last year it was a new team for him and this year they were the team to beat at every race. It’s disappointing knowing that the championship chase is over and we didn’t win the title, but we gave it our best shot.

“It’s a great feeling knowing that I gave it everything I had. Kenny was just flat out better than me in the second half. But it was a great experience and I’ll do better next season because of it.”

Smith finished on the podium four times for the Pat Moroney’s Harley-Davidson team, earning him third place in the standings for the second consecutive season. He didn’t win this year, but he has every intention of making sure he doesn’t go winless again in 2008.

“We struggled this season but have still been able to keep our third place in the standings,” Smith said. “We had some new challenges this year that we were just unprepared for and didn’t have a lot of experience with. It seems like we have a long list of mistakes that we’ve made and I think we have too good of a team to not earn a win. The best news is that we still finished in third place and we learned so much this season. All of our hurdles this year will make us a better team for 2008 and beyond.”

At one point of the season, Smith was as low as sixth place in the standings. Smith said this season has only increased his appetite for a victory.

“We’re going to learn from our mistakes and we’re going to come out fighting for a championship in 2008,” Smith said. “We’re too good of a team to let the lack of wins get us down. It’s going to help us stay focused throughout the offseason. We’re going to be a better team next year.”

Kopp, the 2000 AMA Grand National champion, earned one victory en route to his sixth place finish. He won the Tucson, Ariz., event – the last race of the season.

“The win helped the season a lot,” Kopp said. “It seems like we’ve faced new challenges every week like a flat tire, the bike having problems and a few other things that kept us from really getting into the championship mix. When I got a flat tire with two laps to go in Bulls Gap, it really put a dagger in my heart. It was the second race of the season and it seemed like I was already fighting my way out of the basement after that race.”

Kopp said the competition makes it difficult to climb back into championship contention.

“This is a very tough group of riders and I didn’t feel like I was at the top of my game all season long,” Kopp said. “I had a difficult time finding that little extra edge that would separate me from the rest of the pack. I got a lot of confidence back in Tucson and I just hope that carries over into the offseason and into next year. It was a very trying year but it felt great to finally get that win and get back on top.”

Coolbeth said he can’t possibly know what it will take to win another championship next season, but he’s preparing for anything.

“Someone said it would take seven wins to take the title this season and they weren’t that far off,” Coolbeth said. “It sounds crazy to think about winning more than we did this season. But no matter what, our team is going to be prepared. We work so well together and it makes it fun. Everyone is going to be spending the offseason looking for ways to be better and more competitive. That includes us. I’m already excited about 2008.”
